Children born in 2013 shall be enrolled in the first grade of comprehensive school in Finnish or Swedish by their guardians by 20 January 2020 at the latest. If the child is able to study both in Finnish and Swedish, the guardians may themselves choose in which to enroll the child.
Enrolling in the 7th grade of comprehensive school in Finnish shall be done by 16 January 2020 at the latest.
The autumn term in Finnish-speaking pre-primary education, comprehensive schools and in Espoo International School in Espoo begins on Thursday 13 August 2020.

Enrolling in pre-primary education between 8th and 20th January 2020
The registration period for pre-primary education for the school year 2020–2021 is 8–20 January 2020. Please register using the electronic pre-primary education application form which will be published online on espoo.fi/preprimary on 8th January.
Pre-primary education day-care centres and schools offer early childhood education in the morning before the start of pre-primary education and in the afternoon after pre-primary education. The early childhood education is subject to a charge. Early childhood education connected to pre-primary education is applied for using the same application form as for the pre-primary education place. Exceptions to this are some of the pre-primary education places offered by outsourced and private day-care centres.

Enrolling in the 1st grade of comprehensive school between 8th and 20th January 2020
Children born in 2013 shall be enrolled in the first grade of comprehensive school by their guardians through the electronic Wilma-service between 8th and 20th January 2020. Also the children whose school start has been postponed in the school year 2019–2020 shall be enrolled in the first grade.
All guardians of school newcomers living in Espoo will receive a notification of beginning of compulsory education, which contains a key code for creating a personal Wilma account. With the notification, guardians will receive a brochure Tervetuloa ekaluokalle (in Finnish), which contains additional information on enrolling in the local school and/or applying for other forms of education (such as montessori education, bilingual education, english-language education or swedish-language immersion education). Enrolling in the 7th grade of comprehensive school between 8th and 16th January 2020
Enrolling in the 7th grade of comprehensive school takes place through the electronic Wilma-service between 8th and 16th January 2020. In questions related to Wilma accounts, the guardians may contact the pupil’s current school.
The guardians have received a link from their child’s school to the online brochure Yläkoululaisen opas (in Finnish) in week 48 (25-29 Nov, 2019). The brochure contains additional information on enrolling in the local school and/or applying for other forms of education (such as weighted-curriculum education, English-language education and bilingual education). Applying for weighted-curriculum studies in the 3rd grade
Pupils in weighted-curriculum education study the weighted subject more than those in mainstream education. Pupils in the 2nd grade can apply for weighted-curriculum studies in mathematics and science focus and/or in music between 16 December 2019 and 10 January 2020. Guardians are advised to familirize themselves with the brochure Painotettu opetus ja A-kielet 2020-2021 (in Finnish) before filling in the application form.

Applying for afternoon activities by 4 May 2020 at the latest
Afternoon activities in basic education are after school group activities in which one adult instructs a group of 15 children. The application period to Espoo Finnish-speaking basic education's afternoon activities is 8 January–4 May 2020.
Pupils in 1st and 2nd grade as well as pupils with a special needs education decision can apply for the activities. The application process takes place electronically through Wilma.
Afternoon activities are, in general, arranged in the pupil's own school. Guardians of pupils in special needs education can choose in the application whether they apply for afternoon activities in the pupil's own school or in another school near home.

English-language education in Espoo
Espoo offers versatile foreign-language education: English-language education in Espoo International School and bilingual education (Finnish-English) in seven comprehensive schools. It is possible to apply for foreign-language education already from the first grade.
Espoo International School follows the Finnish National Curriculum and delivers basic education in grades 1-6 and offers the Middle Years Programme (MYP) within a three year period to grade 7-9 students. Swedish education in Espoo
In Espoo there are 11 Swedish-language pre-primary education places and 11 basic education schools. The curriculum is taught entirely in Swedish.
The application period for Swedish pre-primary education and basic education is between 8th and 20th January 2020. Application period for afternoon activities in Swedish is 8 January – 27 April 2020.
