The Nature Photographs of the Year exhibition at Nature House Villa Elfvik 29 January - 3 March 2020 illustrates the diversity of Finnish nature, its views and events, and the experiences and revelations that photographers find in nature.
The exhibition is made up of a total of 39 award-winning photographs from the Nature Photograph of the Year competition. Nearly 14,000 photographs were submitted to the competition.
Images representing all eight traditional series are on show: Plants and Mushrooms, Birds, Landscapes, Mammals, Other Animals, Composition and Shape, Nature and Man and the Junior category. The exhibition also includes photos from a new competition series, Art from Nature, that allowed the photographers to edit their photos more freely. In each category, we show the entries receiving first and second place. The exhibition also includes photographs that were awarded honorary diplomas.
The exhibition, of course, also features the Nature Photograph of the Year 2019, “Bear and Raven” by Kuhmo-based photographer Ville Heikkinen. The jury was fascinated by the epic atmosphere and carefully thought-out composition. They also paid attention to the unique situation depicted in the photograph. Ville Heikkinen is the fourth photographer in the history of the competition to win the main prize more than once.
This is the biggest nature photo contest in the Nordic countries, and it has been organised by the Finnish Nature Photographers’ Association since 1981. The winning photographs are curated into an exhibition that annually tours Finland. They usually arrive at Villa Elfvik in February.
Nature House Villa Elfvik is open Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 15:00 and Sundays from 10:00 to 16:00. Café Elfvik is open on Sundays during Villa Elfvik’s opening hours. There is no entrance fee to the Nature House or the Nature Photograph of the Year 2019 exhibition.
